4 Things to Do on a Money-Free Weekend at Home

Parents playing with kid and dog in sprinklerEven though the world likes to tell you otherwise, you CAN have fun without spending money — plenty of fun! Change up your weekend with one of these four family-friendly and oh-so free activities. They’re sure to get your bodies and brains moving, all without making a dent in your wallet.

1. Have a Spa Day

Whether you’re spending the day home alone, with your partner, or with the kids, a spa day can turn your weekend at-home into a mini vacation. Reach into your medicine cabinets to find beauty supplies that you may have forgotten about and put together an assortment of self-care products to get your spa party started. Some spa activities you can do at home include:

  • Give Yourself a Pedicure: Give your tired feet (and your wallet) a break with a warm soak and an exfoliating scrub. Make your own sugar scrub using two parts honey or coconut oil and one part sugar or ground coffee! Rinse your feet and give them a good massage. Then, clip your nails, and top them off with a fresh coat of your favorite polish.
  • Take a Relaxing Bath: Take a page out of Happy Hour Projects’ playbook and use ingredients from your pantry to make a relaxing bath soak! All you need is coarse salt, baking soda, and a few drops of essential oils. Fill up the tub and enjoy. You can even use a moisturizing hair or face mask while you soak to take your self-service spa experience to the next level.

2. Send the Kids on an Adventure

You don’t have to wait until spring to have an easter egg hunt! Set your kids up on their own adventure in the backyard or around the house by hiding little “treasures” in nooks, crannies, potted plants, and more!

You can use action figures, candy, or even handwritten notes as treasures, or take it to the next level by making them solve riddles in exchange for clues to the next hidden surprise. Add to the excitement by offering a simple prize, such as an extra scoop of ice cream after dinner or extra playtime on the family video game console.

A DIY treasure hunt is a great way to get kids’ bodies and brains moving while staying at home and not spending money. Plus, it’ll get your creative juices flowing too! For more easter egg hunt ideas, check out Zalunira.

3. Try Geocaching

Got a smartphone, a good data plan, and a thirst for adventure? Treasure hunts aren’t just for kids! Geocaching is the adult-version of hunting for hidden gems. It’s a community-run game of hide-and-seek that enables you to explore the neighborhood you’re in, unearth easter eggs hidden by other players, and rediscover your childlike sense of adventure.

Download the app for Android or iOS, follow the clues, and start searching. Excited? If you don’t have a smartphone yet, you can purchase the perfect device for you from Rent-A-Center, like a rent-to-own Samsung Galaxy S20 with a no-contract data plan. Score!

4. Have a Slumber Party

Let the kids celebrate the last days of summer with one last hurrah — an opportunity to stay up past bedtime! Turn on your speakers and smart TV and then cozy up with the family in your comfy chenille sectional.

Use these low-to-no-cost streaming channels to find a family-friendly action movie (or a wholesome coming-of-age flick) that appeals to everyone. Then, kick your feet up for some healthy snacks paired with free family fun.
