By definition, an accent wall is the focal point of a room—and as such it deserves special consideration. It’s an opportunity for you to showcase a favorite color, a cherished collection, or your own personal style. Here are a few neat ideas for making the most of an accent wall.

First, an easy way to create an accent wall is to choose a wall in a room—particularly a wall with an interesting architectural feature (like a fireplace) or the wall on which you will place a favorite piece of furniture—and paint it in a standout color. Select a bold, saturated hue, like lime green or red, if you want a dramatic effect. Or if you prefer neutrals, try a gray wall among your beige walls.
To take your painted accent wall a step further, embellish it with a wall decal, a stencil in the same shade of paint in a high-gloss finish, or a coordinating color applied with a textured roller.
If you want even more pattern as well as color, wallpaper a single wall in your room.
One way to create an accent wall is to choose a theme and build around it. Go with a group of wooden signs, a collection of black-and-white photographs, or a few shelves decked out with books or collected treasures. On a brick or stone accent wall, consider a single statement piece (like an oversize clock or metal sculpture).
Hanging an heirloom quilt, a large mirror, or a piece of framed art are all good ways to add drama to a living room or dining room wall. In the kitchen, an accent wall can host a beloved collection of antique rolling pins, wooden spoons, bowls, baskets, or metal gadgets. The key is to use items that are visually related, whether by color or material.
When it comes to an accent wall (or walls), you can’t go wrong by using elements that you love—and that reflect your personality.
