Feed the Fight Against Hunger with Rent-A-Center’s Fill the Fridge

In an increasingly digital world, practically everything we want and need is just a click away on our computers. Advancements in food delivery services mean it’s even possible to get a week’s worth of grocery shopping done without ever leaving the couch! Despite greater accessibility and abundance, many Americans are going hungry and struggling with food insecurity.

At Rent-A-Center, we’re inviting you to help us fight hunger through our annual Fill the Fridge hunger relief campaign! From now through Saturday, September 25th, you can donate to local food banks when you save money at Rent-A-Center! With your help, partnering food banks can help get food on people’s tables across the country and work towards ending hunger in America.

Hunger in America Is Closer Than You Think

Even though our norm is fully stocked grocery shelves and refrigerated food trucks that run coast-to-coast, many Americans still face food insecurity. In 2019, Feeding America reported that over 35 million people — including over 10 million children — dealt with hunger at one time or another. And that number has only continued to rise.

Feeding America estimates that more than 42 million Americans — including an estimated 13 million children — will experience food insecurity in 2021. That’s about 1 out of every 8 Americans. Whether it’s down your street, right next door, or even in your home, hunger and food insecurity impact your community.

School Closings are Leaving Kids Hungry

Millions of children nationwide depend on the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program at their school. This program provides kids from elementary to high school with consistent meals and a reliable source of nutrition. According to Global Citizen, 30 million children, or roughly more than half of the students in elementary and secondary schools across the country, rely on these programs. Without them, they would be at risk of not having enough to eat.

Recent events are forcing many schools to close their doors, leaving thousands of children wondering where their next meal is coming from. For these kids, hunger means more than discomfort or inconvenience.

Feeding America reports that hungry children are more easily susceptible to physical and intellectual developmental issues, growth impairments, and illness. The emotional stress caused by food insecurity can also leave lasting damage on a child. The stress of not knowing when their next meal will be can cause children to develop social and behavioral problems and prevent them from achieving their full academic potential.

Change Is a Donation Away at Rent-A-Center

Facts and statistics seem to point toward an increase in hunger and food insecurity in America — but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Join your local Rent-A-Center in the fight against food insecurity! During Rent-A-Center’s Fill the Fridge campaign from August 30th to September 25th, we’re partnering with local food banks from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico to help get food onto more tables across the country. How? With help from your donations!

During checkout, you can choose to purchase a pin-up card as a donation to your store’s local food bank partner. Each donation will help our food bank partners increase their food supply and feed hungry Americans.

It’s easy to make a change. While you’re receiving excellent deals and affordable prices on the Rent-A-Center products you love — like appliances, electronics, furniture, and more! — you’re making hunger one less thing for an American child or adult to stress over. That’s money well spent!
