Dust Away Allergies and Breathe Easy This Spring

There are a few things you can always count on during springtime: lots of rainfall, bright blooms, and the return of seasonal allergies. If you have a tough time with indoor allergens, you can likely benefit from knowing how to deep clean a house. Keep reading to learn about common household allergens and how to use spring cleaning to clear your head.

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Allergies Away

Dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, and pollen are among the most common household allergens, and they can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. From sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes to hay fever and asthma flare-ups, allergens affect millions of Americans each year.

And as beautiful as March, April, and May can be, these months also usher in a lot of allergy symptoms due to extra pollen and mold hanging out in the air. The good news is, there are plenty of spring cleaning tips you can use to reduce allergens in your house and enjoy this season to the fullest. Check out our top tips below!

1. Start using a HEPA filter.

A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is one of the best tools for removing allergens and allergy triggers from the air. They can remove over 99% of the dust mites, pollen, and other airborne particles lingering around your home. A HEPA filter can also be used alongside your HVAC system — or with small appliances like a vacuum cleaner. Turning on the air conditioning for a few minutes each day is enough to give allergy sufferers some much-needed relief.

2. Properly clean your carpet.

Carpets hold many allergens, so it’s recommended that allergy-prone people avoid wall-to-wall carpeting. That said, this option isn’t always possible. If your home has a lot of carpeting, vacuum on a weekly basis (at a minimum). This is the best way to ensure pollen and dust don’t settle into the fibers of your carpet.

Remember, vacuuming becomes even more necessary when you’re a pet owner. So, if you’re wondering how to clean a house for pet allergies, vacuuming every few days is your solution. Doing so can help to remove all the tiny dust mites, pet dander, and trapped odors that inevitably get caught up in your carpet and rugs.

3. Limit moisture levels.

Mold is one of the most common allergens in a home. Mold depends on moisture to grow, and when it does grow, allergy symptoms like watery eyes, runny noses, and sneezing result.

The easiest way to eliminate excess moisture and prevent mold in your home is by using a dehumidifier and keeping the house clean. Wipe up any spills or standing water as soon as possible, especially if those spills happen in the kitchen or bathroom. You should always run your bathroom fan during and after a shower, as well. This helps pull moisture out of the air and dry things out much quicker.

4. Prioritize your sleep setup.

Washing and changing your bedding regularly is another way to ease seasonal allergy symptoms. Pollen and other allergens collect on your hair and clothes throughout the day. When you lay down for the night, those particles are transferred to your linens. Ultimately, this is a recipe for serious allergy triggers.

Alleviate these issues by washing your sheets in hot water once a week. For best results, avoid scented cleaners in favor of a mild, non-scented detergent. You can also encase your mattress, box spring, and pillows with allergen-proof covers. Doing so helps control and minimize the allergens you encounter while catching some shut eye.

5. Always clean high to low.

Always clean your home from the top down so that if/when you stir up dust as you’re cleaning, you’re not just moving that dust from one place to another. Instead, you can simply catch it on the way down. Start by dusting top shelves or sweeping out any cobwebs from the corners of your ceiling. Then, remove dust that’s settled on lower shelves or furniture by using a microfiber cloth.

Save your floors for last, either sweeping (and mopping) wood surfaces or thoroughly vacuuming carpets. If you clean from high to low, you’ll be amazed at the difference this makes in eliminating allergen particles rather than spreading them around the room.
