A ladybug and a caterpillar make excellent lunch buddies.
What you need:
- Wax-covered mini cheese wheels (We used Mini Babybels.)
- Goat cheese
- Bread
- Cheese slices
- Black pepper
- Grape tomatoes
- Toothpick
- Cherry stems (optional)
- Raisins
- Small circular cookie cutter
- For the cheese mushrooms, cut a wax-covered mini cheese wheel in half. Make two mushroom stumps by rolling small balls of goat cheese (you could also use marshmallows here). Add dots of goat cheese on each wax half for the final mushroom details.
- Cut a slice of bread into a ladybug shape using scissors or a sharp knife. Cut a slice of cheese into two wing shapes. Use a small circular cookie cutter to punch out a few holes on each wing. Use goat cheese and two black pepper flakes to add eyes to the ladybug.
- Take a toothpick and skewer three tomatoes together. Use another toothpick to poke two holes into the top of one of the tomato and stick cherry stems into the holes to create antennas. Alternatively, you can break the ends off a toothpick and use those as antennas. To finish off the caterpillar, make eyes with a tiny bit of goat cheese and two pepper flakes.
- Toss a big handful of raisins into the bottom of the lunchbox and position your creations on top.
(Note: If your child is under the age of 4, remove the toothpick and the wax from the mini cheese and slice the tomatoes for him or her, and remind school-age children to be careful with the toothpick at lunchtime.)
